What is the best way to attract a bobcat?
The felines prefer thick stuff that offers food and is conducive to their stalking habits. Bobcats will be drawn to clear-cut areas that provide thick cover and food.
What Attracts Them? Bobcats may visit an area to find food, water, shelter, or the space they need to live. Food may include birds, rodents, rabbits, small unattended pets, poultry or other domestic birds, and other small livestock. Water in pools, birdbaths, fountains, and pets' water dishes can attract bobcats.
Bobcat calls should be higher pitched and at lower volumes as they get closer to the call. Bird and rabbit distress are two go-to calling techniques for bobcats.
The cottontail is my go to call, but they will respond to the hoarser jackrabbit sounds as well. The bird sounds are also quite popular among bobcat callers. I start my stand with a low volume whaling sound. I call for about 15 seconds and then stop to let the critter decide if it's hungry or not.
Pure Bobcat Urine used by Trapper's to eliminate fear and to attract other bobcats. Fox, Coyote, Raccoon, Bobcat and most other canines are all attracted to bobcat Urine. Deer and predator hunter's also use as a strong cover scent.
If you want strictly bobcats, use bobcat urine. It's more attractive to bobcats than the urine of other species. But if you're like most of us, you want to catch whatever's there — except possibly skunks and opossums. In that case, I believe the best choice is red fox urine.
Coil-spring foothold traps, longspring foothold traps, and cage traps are recommended for catching bobcats. Powered cable devices can be used if they are set to catch the bobcat by the foot. Bobcats can be trapped using many of the same sets that are used for foxes and coyotes.
Other bobcat sign includes scrapes and beds. Bobcats will make scrapes to cover up scat or as an independent scent marking. These scrapes can be either uni-directional, with one long scrape ending in a pile, or multi-directional with the pile in the middle of several paw marks (see photo).
Bobcats can be active day or night but tend to exhibit crepuscular (dawn and dusk) activity. Their activity peaks three hours before sunset until midnight and again between one hour before and four hours after sunrise. They remain active year round and do not hibernate.
